Ballymoe FC 15/5/2012

Ballymoe FC have reached the Roscommon Cup Final for the first time in the clubs history after a 2 - 1 victory over Castlerea on Saturday evening in Lecarrow.  It should be a great occasion for the club, but one which manager Derek Ward and the team will be going there to win.  The semi-final was a hard fought affair with a slow start for Ballymoe resulting in Castlerea opening the scoring when following up a rebound after a great save from Padraic Fallon.  With 25 minutes left to play Ballymoe found the equaliser when Colm Killackey was taken down in the box. Tom Shaughnessy made no mistake from the resulting spot kick to level up the match.  Chances came to both sides with Castlerea having a goal disallowed for off-site and Colm Killackey hitting the post when following up the rebound from a save from a strong James Connaughton header.  With two minutes left to play however Killackey made up for this miss with a goal worthy of winning any cup tie.  He picked up the ball outside the box and his swerving drive left the keeper with no chance as the ball flew into the top corner of the net.  Ballymoe then held out for a famous win and preperations can begin for the cup final. Team: Padraic Fallon, Ronan Collins (captain), Kevin Morgan, Padraic Flanagan, Tom Shaugnessy, Greg Grogan, Keith Collins, Robbie Keenan, Patrick Flynn, James Connaughton, Colm Killackey, Padraic Joyce, Kevin McLoughlin, Keith Muldoon.
Ballymoe also play in the Division 1 Cup final against Ballaghaderreen which will take place next Friday evening at 6.30 p.m. in Lecarrow.  All support on the day would be greatly appreciated.

The senior side are into the Division 1 Cup Final after a 2 - 0 semi-final victory over Rahara Rovers.  Ballymoe dominated the first half, but had only a Keith Collins goal to show for their efforts.  Rahara had renewed confidence in the second period but couldn't break down the Ballymoe defence, and Colm Killackey sealed victory with 5 minutes left to play.  Unfortunately the B team were unable to make it to the Division 3 final when they were beaten 2 -1 by Skyvalley, even though Ballymoe played the better football on the day.  Skyvalley opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a handball in the area but responded immediately when Ciaran Dowds strike from outside the box found the back of the net.  Ballymoe created numerous chances in the second half but failed to find the net, and when the big Skyvalley striker fell to the ground a second penalty was awarded and sealed victory.

The U-14 team beat Dysart by 5 goals to nil on Monday evening.  Ballymoe led by 2 at the break with Niall Mulhern and Kevin Brogan on target.  Kevin Brogan scored his second after the break and further goals were added by Niall Cunniffe and Darren Boyle.

Ballymoe FC 21/4/2012

The first team were narrowly defeated by 1 - 0 against Ballaghaderreen in the promotion play-off played on Friday night in Lecarrow. A slow start resulted in an early goal coming from a scramble in the box following a corner. An improved second half performance failed to deliver the equalising goal so promotion must now be achieved through the promotion-relegation play-off to be played against the side which finishes third bottom in the Premier Division.
A good week for the underage sides resulted in victories for the U-14 and U-16 sides. The U-14s defeated Kilkerrin 3 - 1, with all the Ballymoe goals coming in the first half, with Darren Boyle twice on target and Niall Mulhern finding the net with an expertly taken free kick. The U-16s had a 4 - 1 victory over Cloonfad with Steven Mulhern scoring twice and one each for David Swift and Daniel Malone.

The first team are through to the next round of the Roscommon Cup after a 4-0 win over Rahara thanks to another Colm Killackey hat-trick and a Robbie Kennan strike. Ballymoe led by 1 at the break when Killackey scored his first after a Padraic Joyce through ball. More urgency was shown early in the second half and two fine goals followed. First Robbier Kennan volleyed with his left foot to the corner of the net giving the Rahara keeper no chance. This goal was then bettered by Killackey
when he volleyed to the corner of the net from a ball over his shoulder, and he completed his hat-trick ten minutes later.

The B team also had an emphatic victory on Thursday evening last when they defeated ballinasloe 6-0 thanks to a Ross Timothy hat-trick and goals from Sean and Adrian Collins and Kevin Mc Loughlin. Unfortunately Ross Timothy suffered a broken ankle during the game and everyone in the club would like to wish Ross a speedy recovery.

The U.16 team defeated Shiven Rovers 5-1 during the week, with the goals coming from a Daniel Malone hat-trick and one each for Steven Mulhern and Paddy Mulheir.

The first team took on Ballaghaderreen in the final Division 1 league game of the season, with both sides knowing that a win would ensure promotion to the Premier Division.  With so much at stake it is maybe no wonder that both sides were cautious in their approach, and chances were limited in the scoreless draw that followed.  Both teams must know play again in a play-off decider to gain promotion.
The U-14 boys began their season in impressive fashion with a 7 -1 triumph over Cloonfad in Division 1.  After going 1-0 down, Ballymoe fought back to lead 2 -1 at the break, and dominated the second half with five more goals.  The goalscorers on the day were Niall Mulhern with a hat-trick and one each for Darren Boyle, James Egan, Anthony Feeney and Michael O'Brien.

The first team moved to the top of Division 1, all be it with a game extra played, with a comfortable 7 - 0 victory over Rahara played at the county grounds in Lecarrow.  The game was effectively over at half-time with Ballymoe leading by 4, with the goals from James Connaughton, Colm Killackey, Keith Collins and Killackey again.  In the second period Kilackey completed his hat-trick with a clinical finish, and further goals were added from the impressive Greg Grogan and Padraig Flanagan.

Unfortunately the Roscommon and District League team were defeated by the Kerry League in the semi-final of the Oscar Traynor Cup in Tralee on a 2 - 0 scoreline.  Roscommon were undone by a early penalty and the second again from a dead ball with a free kick from just outside the box.  Congratulations to Colm Killackey and Greg Grogan and the rest of the side on their achievements this season in getting to this stage of the competition.
The club would like to thank the Boystown Players on their production of "Strandline" this weekend and to all who supported the event, with particular thanks to Tommy Joyce Jnr. and John Collins (Norbrook) for providing the raffle spot prizes on the nights.

Ballymoe FC 20/2/2012

The first team recorded another victory in Division 1 with a 4 - 1 success against Dunmore Town in Ballymoe.  Padraic Flanagan opened the scoring when he headed home a Colm Killackey corner inside the first ten minutes.  It took some excellent saves from Padraic Fallon to ensure Ballymoe went in ahead at the break, but after the interval an improved performance resulted in a close range effort from Keith Collins and a fine team goal expertly finished by Greg Grogan.  Dunmore did pull a goal back, but it was Ballymoe who had the final say when Kevin Morgan rounded the keeper to score after a fine run from full back.
The B team were unfortunate to lose 1 - 0 to Cloonfad on Saturday evening, with some fine performances coming from keeper Martin Grogan, Enda Morgan and Enda O'Rourke.
The club would like to wish good luck to the Oscar Traynor side in their semi-final against the Kerry league in Tralee next week, where two Ballymoe players, Colm Killackey and Greg Grogan will be involved.

The first team put themselves right back in the Division 1 title race with a 3 - 0 victory over previously unbeaten Glen Celtic.  Thomas Mockler put in a man of the match performance in midfield, and it was he who opened the scoring when he broke through the Glen defence before calmly passing the ball to the corner of the net.  The second goal also came before the half-time break when Keith Collins' left foot shot found the top corner of the net.
The second half showed some solid defensive work from a back four with another clean sheet, and the result was made safe when Mockler scored again, this time from a well delivered corner by Keith Muldoon.

The B team were the only side in action this weekend, with a home game against top of the table Skyvalley Rovers.  In an entertaining game there were no goals in the first period, but Skyvalley took control in the second period with two goals in quick succession.  Ballymoe looked to be back in the game when a delicate chip from Patrick Flynn appeared to cross the line, but the appeals were waved away by the referee.  The game finished with a 2 - 0 defeat but there were some solid performances from Ballymoe, particularly from Sean Morris at the back and Tom Killackey in midfield.
Congratulations to the Oscar Traynor side on their 3 - 1 victory over the Inishowen District League, with Ballymoe striker Colm Killackey netting twice.
