Sligo Leitrim & District Soccer League. Round Up 15/5/2012
The Mc Sharry Foley Cup Final was played for on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex between newly crowned Premier league champions Calry Bohs and Real Tubber could Calry make the glorious double or would Real Tubber claim that elusive silverware. In the middle for this Cup tie was Christy Herrity with Ronnie Melly and Christopher Fallon and prior to the commencement of the game a minutes silence was observed in Honour of the late Shane Gilroy RIP colleague friend and team mate of the Calry Club.
The game Started at a high tempo with Calry Bohs quick of the mark the Real Tubber rearguard marshalled by David Curran and James Connolly were under pressure but stemmed the tide somewhat of the Calry frontline lead gallantly by Owen Nicholson then on twenty minutes a free kick on the right taken beautifully by Paddy Heraughty his floated ball into the six yard box seen Jason Murphy rise highest to power home the opener for Calry Bohs past the diving Ross Mc Carrick in the tubber goals. Calry were now in control ten later Shane Fox came close while the Real Tubber midfield Gerry Henry Fabio Cretaro and Martin Keogh putting in double shifts. Owen Nicholson broke from midfield with tremendous pace and was bearing down on goal when chopped down by James Connolly who was yellowed carded foe his transgression the resulting free by Paddy Woulfe was well held by Ross Mc Carrick and Real tubber were lucky to reach half time just trailing by that one goal.
The second half was minutes old when their luck ran out the ever alert Owen Nicholson rattled the Real Tubber net and Calry Bohs were two up and coasting. Real Tubber in fairness had that never say die attitude and with a rub of the green should have pulled a goal back on sixty minutes when Jason Mc Nulty just failed to make contact in the six yard box to reduce the arrears. Tired legs literally started to kick in with Real Tubber Martin Keogh a shade fortunate not to get a yellow after a harsh challenge on Michael Flynn and five minutes later Calry’s Mark Fowley was dismissed with a straight red from referee Christy Herrity and now Tubber had the extra man and with the introduction of Mark Burke and Hughie Marren they tested the Calry defence but in the end found no way past a staunch rear guard. Calry Bohs were presented with their Trophy by Siobhan Mc Sharry MD Mc Sharry & Foley Independent Insurance Brokers Teeling Street Sligo and went on to celebrate the double in style.

Sligo Leitrim & D.S.L. Weekly Round Up 20/4/2012
City United take over the leadership of the Best Western Sligo Southern Hotel Super League after this emphatic win at the bowl in Cliffoney. Gareth Kelly smacked home two goals with brother Chris adding a third Clive Sommers and Stephen Hallihan getting in on the act as well and Gerard Watters scored twice once for his side Cliffoney Celtic and then an own goal for a jubilant City United and what a finish we have in store because the two main contenders have only one game left and both must play Carbury Boyle are first up on Sunday next at Forthill should they defeat Carbury then they will have poll position by two points and seven days later the clash of the season with City having to beat Carbury to take the title mouth watering stuff and remember should Carbury beat Boyle they will be handing the title to City.
A Paul Mc Tiernan hat trick game Aughanagh Celtic a precious point at home to Ballymote Celtic in a cracker of a game Brendan Lowry, Stephen Ross and Niall Brennan on target for Ballymote.
Strand Celtic took three valuable points winning away by the odd goal in five to Coolera Rovers who scored twice with two penalties from Shane Hayes Strand had two great goals from Michael Devins but the man of the moment was Adam Hynes with a scorching free kick that captured three points that will can go a long way in Strand Celtic keeping their Super League status.
League leaders Calry Bohs are one step away from capturing the Andrew Mullen’s Sligo Pallets Premier League with goals from Paddy Wolfe, Owen Nicholson and Paddy Heraughty giving them victory at home to Dromore Villa who scored once through Michael Mc Gowan.
Cartron United keep up the pressure with goals from John Harte and Cormac Coyne snatching the points against an excellent Ballygawley Celtic who opened the scoring through Keith Hennessy.
Chaffpool United with goals from Ray O Grady John Feeney Ronan Forkin and Bill Carty took all three points away to Merville.
The Premier League will be decided on Sunday next but how will it go relegated Merville with one win all season away to league leaders Calry Bohs who should have no problem in dispatching their opponents to lift the title, but beware Merville under the astute management of Frank Mc Garry and brother Jimmy will not be pushed over and should they draw and Cartron win away to Chaffpool then it’s Cartron’s title. All to play for it what to date has been a brilliant battle and in background for runners spot could also be Real Tubber.
Leitrim Villa and Glenview Stars shared the spoils with St John’s claimed the three points against Aclare Celtic in Cleary Landscapes and Pitch Maintenance Division One
In the Connacht Cup Shield Final Real Tubber took up the challenge of Mayo side Ballyheane at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex on a glorious afternoon made for football. The first half was a tame affair and in fact it was only with twenty minutes remaining of normal time when it came to life. Real Tubber attacking down the right seen Fergal Mc Donagh rise highest in the penalty area with a great goal pass the helpless David Mc Hale in the Ballyheane goal. Matters got even worse for Ballyheane when Alan Tuffy was sent off after a rush of blood to the head seen him tackle and upend the real Tubber substitute in the technical area. Then with eight minutes remaining a long ball into the Real Tubber Area caused confusion and Alan Mc Hugh could not believe his luck as his effort found the back of the Real Tubber net despite the efforts of keeper Ross Mc Carrick and the game was plunged into extra time. Mark Burke was playing a stormer in midfield for Real Tubber but despite the extra man they never capitalised on it to any extent and so it went to the dreaded penalty shoot out. Both keepers made saves but in the end the final spot kick fell to Ballyheane’s Mathew Conroy and he made no mistake with a thunderous shot past Ross Mc Carrick to lift the Connacht Cup Shield to Ballyheane for the first time in their history and well deserved it was playing with only ten men for well over thirty minutes. Alan Mc Hugh was awarded Man of the Match as selected by the journalists present.

Boyle Celtic hold on to the leadership of the Best Western Sligo Southern Hotel Super League by a slender two points after their victory over neighbours Aughanagh Celtic thanks to a double strike from Lee Mc Killen and a third from leading hit man Michael Corrigan. Aughanagh replied once through the ever alert Paul Mc Tiernan and Aughanagh despite losing this local derby can still pick up vital points with their two remaining games. Boyle play their last league fixture on Sunday the 29th away to contenders Carbury who can still statically claim second spot and on the day can put a massive dent in the title challenge of Boyle Celtic.
The biggest threat to all title pretenders are City United they hit Ballymote Celtic for six at Brother Walfrid Park Christopher Kelly netting a hat trick namesake Gareth adding the fourth with Clive Sommers and captain Marvel Gary Rooney rounding of business for a rampant City while Ballymote replied once through Conor Meehan. City play away to Cliffoney Celtic on Sunday next Sunday and should both they and Boyle win then its a two point difference with Carbury a game in hand and yes that’s against Carbury on the 6th May it’s all to play for at the top. However on the relegation and play off areas danger lurks for the bottom four Manor Rangers recorded a blistering win over Coolera Rovers with a five goal roasting without reply Alan Hickey and Killian Kerrigan each netting twice and Anthony Mc Donald adding the fifth in a one sided encounter but these three points may well afford Manor a playoff position at least this will again depend on how Cliffoney and Strand Celtic perform in their remaining games so at top and bottom its proving to be one of the most exciting Super League for some years.
League leaders Calry Bohs travelled to Tubbercurry in the Andrew Mullen’s Sligo Pallets Premier League in the knowledge that a win would push them nearer the Premier title anything less and it opened the door a little bit more for a serious challenge from both Real Tubber and Cartron United. The game was played at a high tempo throughout with few chances in front of goal but on sixty five minutes Calry got the rub of the green when a Paddy Wolfe shot came back of the post and Hit Real Tubber Keeper Ross Mc Carrick to go in of him for the only goal of the game. It was tough on Real Tubber who were excellent but Calry Bohs have also shown class and determination in a most exciting clash.
Cartron United thanks to a Kieran Coyle super strike on fifty five minutes gave them all three points against a very good Coolaney United side this win gives continues the superb drive of Cartron for major honours but it now looks a two horse race for silverware in the Premier unless form goes out the window while at the bottom Merville are already relegated as to who will join them is a lottery and perhaps who will meet Strand Celtic reserves in the play off for Premier League status is an even bigger question so it’s all to play with fortune favouring the Brave.
Glenview Stars shared the spoils with Aclare Celtic in Cleary Landscapes and Pitch Maintenance Division One while St John’s claimed the three points against Leitrim Villa.

Sligo Leitrim & D.S.L. Weekly Round-Up 9/1/2012.
The Sligo Leitrim and District League representative team journeyed to Milebush Castlebar to challenge the Mayo League in this second round clash of the Umbro Oscar Traynor competition. Mayo broke the deadlock after ten minutes when Brendan Lavelle got the rub of the green when no offside was given and he rounded Tony Clarke in the Sligo goals to tap home the opener. Mayo were now on top and Sligo Captain Gary Rooney had his hands full in midfield with a battle royal between him and Gerard O Boyle with the latter going close on twenty one minutes with a blistering shot just going marginally wide of the Clarke’s goal. Referee Damien MC Grath seemed a little under pressure and he allowed some rough challenges from both sides to go unpunished in particular some very hard tackles by Declan Flynn at centre back for Mayo and yet in was Gareth Kelly of Sligo Leitrim who got the first yellow on twenty seven minutes when protesting about another heavy tackle on him. Mayo were now employing dropping the ball over the back line of defenders and allowing the fleet of foot Brendan Lavelle the opportunity to run into the space and a job he exploited very well especially with little chance of being caught offside. Clive Sommers and John Gaffney were on overtime in the heart of the visitors defence with Mayo piling on the pressure then the second yellow card went against Sligo Leitrim again when Colin Jinks tackled Danny Scahill in what was no better or worse than previous tackles. The resulting free kick saw Gerard O Boyle coming close yet again with his header coming back of the post. Gareth Kelly then worked a corner kick that resulted in three consecutive corners on the Mayo goal but they caused little trouble. On the stroke of half time Mayo skipper Declan Flynn eventually picked up a yellow card after a foul on Gary Rooney, then Keith Nibbs brought off a great save from Neil Mc Nicholas in the Mayo goals and Sligo had two more golden opportunities to level matters before the break but it was not to be.
The second got under way and once again it was that man Brendan Lavelle making Tony Clarke take of a superb save on forty nine minutes then one minute later Keith Nibbs broke the Mayo offside trap and racing through on goal he drew out keeper Mc Nicholas before passing to Gareth Kelly to slot home a glorious equaliser. Mayo came right back on the attack and Declan Flynn brought out another superb save from Clarke. On sixty minutes the game turned on its head referee Damien MC Grath awarded a penalty to Mayo which appeared reasonable but then he produced the Red Card to Sligo Leitrim Captain Gary Rooney for something that was said. Danny Scahill slotted home the resulting penalty but the game was effectively over with a needless red card then a blatant penalty was denied Sligo Leitrim on seventy minutes when Gareth Kelly was hacked down in the Mayo box in full view of the referee only to see play waved on. Twelve minutes from time Michael Duffy got Mayo’s third and three minutes into extra time keeper Tony Clarke with the ball in his possession was felled to the ground by Mayo substitute Brian Gallagher who then placed the loose ball into an empty net. The Sligo Leitrim players waited for a free kick but the goal was allowed stand. In the end the score line was academic but with six yellow cards and three red all dished out by Mr Mc Grath to the neutral observer by his lack of control was to a large extent the author of his own work that seen him more the focal point then the teams. In the end the Roscommon League would now appear to be flying the colours for Connacht in this year’s Oscar Traynor.

Yeats United was poetry in motion as they grabbed all three points in this North Sligo derby at home to Cliffoney Celtic in Carney in the Best Western Sligo Southern Hotel Super League. John Hestor scored two cracking goals aided and abetted with further strikes through Mark Gillen and Paul Logan with Cliffoney Celtic replying once through Gavin Gilsenan but Yeats were too fast and clinical and this results leaves them League leaders going into the Christmas break happy days for the Carney Boys.
Ballisodare United entertained Leitrim side Manor Rangers on the impeccable appointed Astro turf at Cleveragh that seen Ballisodare eventually emerge winners by the odd goal in three but they had to work all the way. The first half was a scoreless affair but ten minutes into the second half and Anthony Mc Donald pounced to fire Manor Rangers into the lead with a superb strike. Ballisodare equalised on seventy five minutes thanks to an Anthony Fallon special and five minutes later Darragh Healy struck the all important winner, but in fairness Manor was unlucky not to have taken something from this encounter and with a full side can still be a force to be reckoned with.
In the Sligo Pallets Premier League Calry Bohs made the long trip to Coolaney a profitable one hitting the home side for three without reply. This was Calry at their best with Colm Devaney on target twice and a third from the ever alert Owen Doherty securing victory and leaving Calry in second spot on the leader board. The interesting thing here is that Calry although four points behind leaders Boyle Celtic Reserves have three games in hand and should they maximise their obvious potential there is no reason as to why they cannot leave the Premier title this season.
Real Tubber another side with massive potential brought their game to the Sports Complex Cleveragh to play their league fixture with Chaffpool United, both sides adapted to the fast and excellent Astro surface to serve up an exciting game. The fabulous Fabio Cretaro younger brother of Sligo Rovers legend Raffaele scored two magnificent goals with a third coming from the lethal boot of Stephen Matthews capturing all three points for South Sligo Kingpins Real Tubber, Brendan Brogan pulled back one goal for Chaffpool United but the day and the points belong to Tubber.
One game was down for decision in the Cleary Landscapes and Pitch Maintenance Division One with St John’s and Benbulben also played on the Astro pitch at Cleveragh and once again it proved a happy hunting ground for St John’s Paul Scanlon opened the account for St John’s and Brian Keaney added two more given St John’s clear leadership of Division One Benbulben had a consolation courtesy of John Gilson but at the break its St John’s who can lift silver once they can keep their momentum to the same high standard..
